Project Description
Problem In Croatia it is hard to incorporate natural light in the communications of social housing structures due to the tendency of closed, monumental, almost brutal way of designing. Todays society and economy sees housing architecture only through the parameters of efficiency and profitability. They create social distancing, apathy and the world in which humans feel like mere spectators rather than feeling like they inseparably belong. By introducing the light, somewhere where it is not expected, such a basic concept, we create space inside the building that impetus a new way of living. People would have a special, comfortable space in the center of the building that calls for many possible activities such as mini trade markets, business meetings or conventions, but also chance encounters. We would like to propose a solution in a form of a modular building that can adapt to almost any site, any condition. Concept We started from 3d modul with dimensions 3,2m x 3,2m x 3,2m. With it we were able to create tree types of units. They can be arranged in many possible ways (like pieces of puzzle), creating a unique structure with a same quality of living and healthier living environment. We present one of possible ways of composition we adapted to the site of given assignment. The whole system actually works as an organic pyramid or truncated cone that was proven to be the most efficient of light collecting as it perfectly diffuses light. The structure walls are made of our units mentioned above that in that way collect the most light possible due to the big glass openings on the pyramid façade. When composing the structure we gave extra attention for units not to shade each other and assemble them in a way they create even more holes on the side of the building for more light to get to the inside. To enhance the light inside the structure we decided to use the glass brick floors for the galleries that connect units. With this intervention we were able to create diffusion of light. The same principle was used on the ground floor allowing the light to enter underground level which, in our case, is garage, but can work in almost any form of mixed use. It was only logical to use that well lit inside of the building for extra greenery that becomes multipurpose. We imagined that spaces as mini gardens that may provide inhabitants with fresh food, purifies air and it can also be a mean of connection, the common theme for conversation. The plants in the inside create the game of light and shadow allowing inhabitants to find the niche that suits each person´s preference. From highly lightened spaces, over shadowed ones to small introverted niches hidden in “cubes” covered in vines. Each space has its own soul and atmosphere. The mini gardens also appear on the roofs of units allowing plants to naturally shade inside of the apartments in case of possible overheat. The building intends to elevate the everyday experience of life of its users. Every form of life needs light, so do we. Therefore we need to rethink the value of light in our everyday life.
