Project Description

BACKGROUND: Ocean ecology is an intriguing part in the history of human development. However, the inexhaustible development and greed of human society have consumed ocean ecological resources in large quantities, and the ocean debris has replaced the wanton waters of the past. A huge amount of garbage permeates the surface of seawater, which hinders the photosynthesis of microorganisms and directly threatens the foundation of ocean ecology. Under the correction and appeal of international organizations, both the natural sciences and social sciences have made their own contributions to the protection and development of marine ecology, and there seems to be very little that can be done in the field of architecture. However, should we architects sit on the sidelines? OF COURSE NOT, we architects should appropriately take the initiative to change our role in social development, from passive bystanders to active participants and even sponsors, taking our social responsibilities as a responsible architect. This design is the first attempt to actively change our role in the society、solve social problems and even change the world. CONCEPT: The introduction of light into the deep sea through architecture promotes the growth of biodiversity, and at the same time triggers human emotions to resonate with nature and creatures, and then saves the marine ecology from extinction and realizes the revitalization of the entire marine ecological civilization at the material and spiritual level. In addition, humans can also penetrate the marine world through the light device to promote the developmental protection of marine ecology. ISSUES: ISSUE 1: As human pollution of the environment has become more and more serious, the density of microplastics in seawater has increased from 0.3 per cubic meter to 1.09 per cubic meter in the past 20 years, which has weakened the light that has penetrated below sea level, greatly hindering photosynthesis in seawater, and it has caused the death of a large number of microorganisms、fish and shrimp, which in turn disrupted the balance of the entire marine ecology. ISSUE 2: However, due to lack of empathy and respect for nature, humans have not stopped polluting the environment, and the future marine ecology is in jeopardy. SITUATION: As the density of microplastics on the surface of seawater continues to rise, a large number of whales that went ashore due to lack of fish & shrimps, eventually stranded in the waters near San Francisco each single year. More and more animals have died due to environmental pollution, but we humans have chosen to stand by in the face of disaster. Therefore, we decided to start with saving the whale, not only to save the species, but also to save our planet. This is just the beginning. OPERATION: Because the microplastics on the surface of the seawater hindered the growth of whale food, we decided to extend the building to deeper sea (30-40 feet deep) to prevent whales from stranding. And the light reflection device was placed in the building to let the unit light enter the seawater from once to twice or more, which greatly promotes photosynthesis and guarantees food sources for whales. Due to the lack of empathy for nature, we decided to combine whales and architecture: interaction between a strip volume and the lofting-volume baesd on whale’s organs. When humans enter buildings, they enter whales. The process of walking in the building is to experience the whole process of whale from fresh to near death and finally rescued, so that people can feel the helplessness of creatures, enhance empathy for nature, and finally learn to protect the environment.
