Project Description
Problem Under ‘The 1962 Standard Design Plan for School Building’, the same school buildings are still being built across the country 60 years later. The plan was designed with just the efficiency of control as a top priority, without considering individual users, including natural lighting, students' rest, activity and student-to-student communication. The problem of natural lighting is especially serious, as students in Korea still spend 12 years in school, 16 hours a day, relying 100% on artificial lighting so far in 2020. ‘The 1962 Standard Design Plan for School Building’ was proposed as the repetition of the same classroom module throughout the country. Repetition of these modules has the advantage of being easy to apply to various environments. But the problem lies in the module itself, not the repetition. Students who have to spend 16 hours a day for 12 years in classroom modules in school, where there is no natural light and no consideration for individuals, fell into deep depression. This lack of natural light is a partial cause to "THE HIGHEST SUICIDE RATE OF TEENAGERS IN THE WORLD." We have concluded that this is a serious and severe problem, and we would like to propose a new classroom module that reflects natural light and individual considerations. Solution Due to the drastic decrease in the birth rate, the number of students has now dropped over by 70 percent compared to 1962. Apart from the social/economic problems arising from this, we judge that it is a considerable boon from an educational point of view. A one-third reduction in the number of students means a threefold increase in the space per student. In fact, the number of empty classrooms left unattended at school has increased significantly. Using this neglected space, we have devised a way to bring in natural light that did not exist at all in the school building, and together we created a large space for relaxation and communication. A new classroom module proposal As noted above, there are identical school buildings all over in Korea. We have adopted a remodeling method that preserves the structure of existing school buildings yet allows new classroom modules to be inserted. With the method of remodeling, new classroom modules can be applied more easily. Based on the fact that nearly half of the classrooms remain unused, the existing square-shaped classrooms were cut in half while maintaining their shapes. The space between classrooms, which has been cut in half, is used as an open space, a terrace, and a communication space. Details Increase the effect of light inflow using various devices 1. The open space in the hallway A huge open space is placed between the classroom modules. The triangular column-shaped open space delivers natural light from the fourth floor rooftop to the hallway of the first floor. At the same time, each of the three sides is in contact with the corridor and the classrooms on both sides, serving to transmit natural light to the entire floor. 2. The classroom terrace While light from the rooftop focuses on providing natural light to communication and rest areas around the corridor, natural light from the terrace focuses on providing maximum lighting experience to students in the classroom. Since students spend about 10 to 11 hours of the 16-hour school day in the classroom, the quality of natural light flowing into the classroom has the greatest impact on their psychological state, and is absolutely important.
