Project Description

Light is one of the most mysterious tools in the arsenal of man. Since ancient times, mankind has tried to tame its power. Light is a phenomenon that gives rise to space, reveals the material nature of the world. We perceive the world mainly due to vision, therefore we see space through the prism of optical phenomena. Architects create spaces based on the principles of light and shadow. Using phenomena such as reflection of light, absorption of light, dispersion, they can control the perception of the form of space. Inspiration Nature is an amazing system. Her wealth is incomprehensible. One of the reasons for this diversity is the phenomenon of polymorphism. Briefly, the essence of the polymorph can be explained as the ability of an object to reside in various forms or to have a different structure during its life cycle. Gradually, with the development of science and technology, the concept of polymorphism migrated to the field of computer science. Here it acquired a similar meaning. So it can be described with the phrase "One interface - many implementations." Idea But what if with the help of light we create a space that could enclose not one, not two, but many spaces? What if the principle of polymorphism is transferred to the construction of space? What if you create a space that can change its appearance without physical and spatial changes? One room - one form - many embodiments. Mechanism The basis for thinking about polymorph space is the technique of using normal maps for low-poly models, which is used in 3D graphics. In essence, this is a way to make flat polygons behave like a three-dimensional body. In the standard form, the polygon should reflect light rays perpendicular to its plane and parallel to each other. However, if you complicate the shape, give it volume, then the rays of light will be reflected perpendicular to the plane of the body, but will have a different direction relative to each other. In order to facilitate the simulated scenes, artists resort to the use of low-poly models. Those, in turn, are a kind of trick, an optical illusion. So, due to normal maps, it is possible to distort the reflection of light rays from a flat polygon as if it is a three-dimensional body. A similar principle of optical illusion could be used to form a built environment. Thus, turn a story with a famous end into a living narrative for the viewer, a performance where architecture plays the main role. A necessary step towards achieving the goal is the creation of a structure that would selectively absorb or reflect light. Therefore, the material choice is important. There are some significant physical qualities to focus on, such as reflectivity, smoothness, and albedo of material. In the process of analysis, the brushed metal was chosen among other materials. Brushed steel has enough deepness in shadows, but it is not too dark. This material reflects most of the light. These aspects make it the best one for the purpose of light interaction. The main idea is to apply the chosen material in special construction. That has a form of the panels which are joint to the walls of the room. The material should be transformed into the smallest pieces, particles. Each of the pieces has to direct the reflected light. It is possible in the way of changing their position. The next step of our reflections was to find a way to change the particles’ angle of rotation. And the solution came from the origins of the material itself. It is metal. And the metal shows nice magnetic qualities. Our concept proposes to change the position of the elements by changing the electromagnetic fields near. If it is controlled, it is possible to tune the picture of the panels. Application This idea should not be perceived as the every-day-project but it comes from the intention to find new ways of emotional interaction with people. The architecture is not just about space. It is also about the atmosphere, esthetics. Architecture can be a cure for our bodies and, what is more, for our minds. This project is more about spiritual practices and dialogue with the public.
