Project Description

Site & Background: In late March and early April 2019, Holden Matthews set fire to three black churches in Louisiana. The burning of the three black churches, which raise money to improve black lives, sparked outrage at racial discrimination, despite claims that they were just trying to make themselves "more like a black metal rocker," according to a survey. The people praying here, and even people from other parts of the world, call for its reconstruction, for racial equality and class equality. It's not just the problem of discrimination between ethnic groups, but there are prejudice and inequality in many parts of life. Although we don't say it, it still exists. The church is the spiritual place to clean up human psychology, and it should not be violated. In these places, the race should be equal, the class should be equal, and even everything should be equal. Inspiration & Concept: The inspiration comes from monochromatic space and mirror material. When white light shines on an object, part of it is absorbed, and the light of its own color will be reflected into people's eyes. Based on this principle, without white light in monochromatic space, all objects will be immersed in monochromatic environment and "lose color". The specular material does not show its own color, but it can reflect the surrounding color into people's eyes. This project wants to build a new Memorial Church space on the basis of the burned church. There is no discrimination and Prejudice in this space, and everything is equal. The exterior glass contrasts with the old church facade and reflects the surrounding environment. In the interior monochromatic light space, everything fades color and becomes equal. Operation: 1.Repair part of the volume completely according to the burned contour, use mirror material, and eliminate color attribute 2.The new space retains the original layout, the central axis is the original ridge line, and the baptism pool is set at the eccentric position 3.The shape of the opening of the skylight in the fifth facade comes from the architectural texture of the block, reflecting the superposition of context 4.The curved surface of the inner interface echoes the original broken roof. The opening under the skylight comes from the grid texture of the block 5.The skylight is generated by lofting the upper and lower openings, and the light is filtered into soft yellow monochromatic light after multiple reflections
