Project Description

As Chinese intangible cultural heritage, shadow play is now known or contacted by fewer and fewer young Chinese children. Now the expression of drama is almost entirely movies and TV. However this ancient dramatic expression is gradually forgotten by people. Therefore, we want to show the shadow play to everyone again by using sunlight, so that it can shine again. In the darkness, a lamp and a white curtain were sung and operated behind the scenes by artists. They used vivid shadow characters to deduce wonderful stories. This is the ancient opera, shadow play, which was once a popular art form, but now it is rarely seen. Shadow play, also known as shadow puppetry, is an ancient form of storytelling and entertainment which uses flat articulated cut-out figures (shadow puppets)which are held between a source of light and a translucent screen or scrim. The cut-out shapes of the puppets sometimes include translucent color or other types of detailing. Various effects can be achieved by moving both the puppets and the light source. A talented puppeteer can make the figures appear to walk, dance, fight, nod and laugh. The creative inspiration comes from the urban community life in a real society, creating a different fun space experience for children As an activity center for children, children can experience traditional Chinese shadow puppet culture up close, interact with shadow puppets, and inherit and develop shadow puppet culture.
